Tanzania Travel Guide

From the Wildebeest Migration to the Big 5 and Tropical Beaches

Safari happens almost everywhere in Tanzania, East Africa’s second-largest country. Few destinations can rival Tanzania’s diversity of wildlife and landscapes, making it a premier choice for safari enthusiasts.

From the classic savannahs of the Serengeti, Tarangire, and Ngorongoro Crater to Zanzibar’s beaches and coral reefs, a Tanzania safari promises unforgettable experiences.

And that’s before you discover the off-the-beaten-path gems like chimpanzee trekking in the untouched rainforests of Mahale and Rubondo, or crowd-free game viewing among the beautifully wild and unique landscapes of Nyerere (previously Selous) and Ruaha.

Sandy Shores Safaris is here to guide you through Tanzania’s wonders and craft a personalized safari adventure tailored to your interests and budget.

Witness the Great Wildebeest Migration

The annual Wildebeest Migration in the Serengeti is a wildlife spectacle unlike any other. Forming the centrepiece of most inaugural Tanzania safari itineraries, the Migration is a mind-blowing display of nature at her most extraordinary.About 2 million wildebeest, zebras, and antelopes navigate the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, facing predators and crossing rivers in search of fresh grazing lands.

  • Serengeti National Park hosts most of the Migration.

  • Mobile camps move to stay close to the herds.

  • June to October is prime time for river crossings, but availability is limited. Book a year in advance for the best accommodations.

  • Some accommodations offer easy access to river crossing points.
  • Alternatively, witness calving season from December to March for fewer crowds and equally breathtaking views.

NOTE : availability of well-located safari camps between June and October (river crossing season) is limited. If you want front-row seats to the dramatic river crossings, you should book your Tanzania safari at least a year in advance. Or opt to go when the herds give birth and graze their way across the plains, which is just as impressive to see but easier to guarantee – plus the tourist crowds are fewer. Chat with one of our Sandy Shores Safaris to plan your trip to coincide with the movements of the herds.
